Cypress Family Dental
At Cypress Family Dental we are always striving to provide the best dental care and treatments for our patients. We are proud to announce that we are now offering KoR® teeth whitening at our Cypress dental practice. If you are in the area and looking to brighten your smile we encourage you to contact our office to set up an appointment!
What Makes KöR® Different?
This system of whitening was developed by Dr. Rod Kurthy who is a renowned cosmetic dentist and teeth whitening expert. The unique scientific formulation rejuvenates teeth, providing amazingly whitening results with little to no sensitivity! With the KoR Whitening System you get a scientifically designed whitening system that delivers the following:
- Consistently exceptional results
- Little to no sensitivity
- The only whitening system proven to whiten even tetracycline stained teeth.
- A lifetime of naturally bright, white teeth with easy periodic at-home maintenance.
- KöR is perfect for any age, any case.
What If I Have Sensitive Teeth?
If you have sensitive teeth then you have little to nothing to worry about when it comes to this teeth whitening system. Whitening gels become more and more acidic as they break down, resulting in an ever increasing possibility of sensitivity and pain. KöR’s constant refrigeration virtually stops the breakdown of whitening gels thus reducing the possibility of pain and sensitivity. The constant refrigeration also eliminates the need for chemical stabilizers, further reducing the possibility of pain and sensitivity.
How Exactly Does This System Work?
KöR Whitening works by restoring your teeth’s ability to absorb oxygen. Oxygen from KöR Whitening gel is absorbed deeply into the tooth, dissolving stain molecules. Decades of scientific research and millions of whitening cases have proven teeth whitening is entirely safe for teeth and gums.
All KöR Whitening gels are continuously refrigerated, from the time they are manufactured until they arrive cold-packed at our office. That means we always use the freshest, most incredibly potent gels every time! The difference in whitening results is amazing!

There are hundreds on the market. Many shapes. Many styles. And every color. So how do you choose the “right” one? The one toothbrush that’s going to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy year after year? Dr. Wood at Cypress Family Dental is committed to making sure you and your family have great oral health. Brushing and flossing daily can go a long way in making that happen, so here are a few tips that might help you discover the toothbrush you were meant to have.
Electric, Manual, Organic?
More and more electric toothbrushes are coming on the market and at more affordable prices. You may be convinced to purchased one based on your belief that it will guarantee cleaner teeth. Your Cypress Family Dental staff warn that this just isn’t the case. There’s no research that proves that an electric brush is any better at cleaning teeth than a manual brush. The important thing is to follow the instructions for either brush to ensure you are brushing all surfaces of every tooth for the recommended amount of time. Now, if you have arthritis or some other condition that makes brushing manually difficult, then an electric brush may be the best choice.
Soft, Medium, or Hard?
Like Goldilocks in her choice of bear beds, you have three choices in toothbrush bristles when purchasing your toothbrush – soft, medium or hard. Dr. Wood recommends staying away from the hard bristle brushes as they can cause irritation and damage to your teeth and gums. Medium bristled toothbrushes can be used, but you still need to be careful not to brush too vigorously. For the all-around best choice, Dr. Wood recommends that you and your family purchase soft-bristled brushes. These are more gentle on your gums and can still be flexible enough to get in between teeth and braces to remove plaque and food particles.
What Style Should I Choose
Toothbrushes today come in hundreds of styles and colors. From superheroes, to Pokemon, to all the Disney princesses, companies do their best to attract children to want their brand of brush. For adults, every brand has its own “special” features. Dentists say, if you want to brush with a SpongeBob SquarePants toothbrush, go for it! There is little noticeable difference between brush styles and their ability to clean your teeth. So if Scooby Doo makes your child a happier and longer brusher, that’s great. The only thing Dr. Wood suggests is that you stick with a no-slip handle that allows you or your child to grip the brush with ease.
How Big Should My Brush Be?
Toothbrushes come in round heads, full heads, elongated heads, and with all size handles. The only rule here is to buy a brush that fits the brusher. Children or adults with smaller mouths should find a brush that fits inside between the teeth and the cheek and can brush a couple of teeth at a time. Most adults will want a brush head that’s ½” wide and 1” tall for the most effective way to reach all parts of your teeth. Generally, smaller headed brushes can more easily reach into all areas of the mouth.
Dr. Wood and his friendly staff at Cypress Family Dental are always happy to answer any questions you have about types of toothbrushes or any of the dental procedures his dentistry offers. If you need a check-up, or have questions about braces or other orthodontic treatment, give him a call at (714) 828-4010. Our dental office is conveniently located between Cypress and La Palma and we’re ready to work with you and your family members to keep your teeth healthy.

These days, there’s an app for everything – and that includes dental health! We know how hard it can be to get kids invested in their dental health, but it’s incredibly important that children take their dental health and hygiene seriously. Thankfully, technology can help. Here are our top 5 dental hygiene apps for kids – you can use them to help make oral health more fun for your kids and get them invested in their smile.
This free, award-winning app makes brushing fun by playing music for exactly 2 minutes while kids brush. It takes its music selection at random from the phone its installed on, so it’s a great way for kids to rediscover their music collection, brush for the necessary amount of time, and jam out in the name of oral hygiene!
This innovative app puts kids on the other side of the chair, letting them play the part of dentist as they perform procedures to clean up the teeth and smiles of their patients. It helps kids get familiar with the dentist office and see that dentistry really isn’t so scary after all.
Chomper Chums uses fun, animated cartoon characters to teach kids the correct techniques for oral hygiene. Informative, easy-to-understand videos show kids the right way to brush, floss, and clean their teeth, helping them build healthy habits that will last them a lifetime.
Disney Magic Timer is similar to Brush DJ, but it features the full cast of Disney’s iconic animated characters. Kids can choose their favorite characters, collect digital stickers, and even see a calendar with stars on the days they’ve brushed their teeth twice.
KidsDental is a comprehensive educational app that teaches children just about everything they could possible want to know about dental health and oral hygiene. From oral anatomy to eating right for dental health, KidsDental is a great companion for growing teeth!

Dr. Wood and his team here at Cypress Family Dental want to be sure we keep our patients informed about upcoming events in the office, and remind them on how to make their visits as efficient as possible! Below are a few events and reminders to look out for from October- December. Please give us a call if you have any questions!
Candy Buy Back Program
With October just a week away, we thought we’d send out a friendly reminder that Cypress Family Dental is doing our Candy Buy Back Program once again! If you’re a new patient or didn’t have a chance to participate last year, here are the details!
What is it?
While everyone deserves a good candy binge, we all know the repercussions that come with sugary hard foods that damage your teeth. If you feel like skipping out on the candy this year and saving your favorite dentist and orthodontist (Dr. Wood!) the trouble, you can donate your candy to troops overseas! We will be accepting candy bags from trick-or-treating on November 2nd and will give you $1 for every pound of candy you donate! All candy will be sent to the American troops in Germany.
To participate you must be between the ages of 2-16. Every child must be accompanied by an adult and there is a 5lb bag limit per child participating. For more information, see the flyer below!
A Friendly Patient Reminder
We want to remind you to schedule your next appointment before your insurance benefits expire on December 31st! Dr. Wood wants you to make the most of your insurance and save as much as you can at your next visit.
As an incentive to schedule your appointments early, anyone that makes an appointment and completes treatment before December 23rd will receive 2 movie tickets courtesy of Cypress Family Dental!
Please give us a call if you have any questions, and happy fall!

While it may not feel like it with this crazy hot weather in Cypress, the fall season is certainly upon us! We love everything that comes with fall: from pumpkin patches, to cinnamon in the air, and fun Halloween costumes, what’s not to love? To get us into the fall spirit, we thought we‘d share some of our favorite recipes that also happen to be braces-friendly!
This is a great side dish for fall! The recipe is simple, healthy, and great for your braces! Here is what you’ll need:
-1 large butternut squash (peeled, seeded and cut into 1 inch cubes)
-3 tablespoons of olive oil
-2 tablespoons of brown sugar
-1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
-1 teaspoon of kosher salt
-1 teaspoon of fresh cracked pepper
To make this delectable side dish, preheat your oven to 425F and line a baking sheet with foil. In a large bowl combine all of the ingredients above and toss until thoroughly coated. Transfer to the foil-lined baking sheet and spread into an even layer. Roast for 40 minutes and rotate midway to ensure even baking. You will know that the squash is done with the edges are brown and the cubes are fork tender!

We understand how hectic life can be, so why not make an easy fall dinner that requires little to no effort on your part? This crock pot chili recipe is tasty, simple, and braces-friendly as well!
-1lb of cooked ground beef
-1 24oz can of tomato sauce
-1 tablespoon tomato paste
-1/4 cup of water
-1 can black beans drained
-1 can kidney beans drained
-1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
-1/4 teaspoon sugar
-1/4 teaspoon oregano
-1/4 teaspoon black pepper
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-1/4 teaspoon black pepper
-¾ teaspoon cumin
-2 tablespoons chili powder
To make this delicious chili, brown your beef in a medium skillet until cooked through and drain the excess fat. Combine all ingredients into a slow cooker and mix well. Cook on medium heat for 4 hours. Serve with your choice of toppings: green onions, sour cream or cheese are some of our favorites!

What sport screams fall to you more than any other? Football of course! These football brownies are not only adorable, but they are quite possibly the easiest dessert you’ll ever make (and you’ll look like you spent hours on it!)
-1 9×13 tray of brownies cooled (store bought or made from a box)
-1 package of vanilla icing from the store
-1 Ziplock bag
-Oval shaped cookie cutter (or cut by hand using a knife)
To assemble, take your cooled brownies and cut them into football shapes using a cookie cutter or a knife by hand. Next, take your vanilla icing and place it in a Ziplock bag and cut the corner tip of the bag off to make a pastry bag. Draw two lines on each tip of the football, and finish it by making the laces in the middle with one long line, and 3-4 small lines across it. Use the picture as a reference! If you want to get extra fancy, place them on a plate and dye your remaining frosting green with food coloring to make grass around the footballs. Everyone will LOVE this dessert at your next party!

We hope you enjoy these fall recipes as much as we do! To make an appointment at our Cypress orthodontics office, please give us a call at 714-828-4010. Happy fall!
